Art is not necessarily about being loud and in your face, or “pay attention to me” or “look at me, I’m awesome because I’m a sexual lady.”
What we dare to call art nowadays is the same shit, repackaged in a body that’s 20 years younger. Same bleach-blonde hair. Same ruby red lips. Same “shocking,” grinding-up-on-this-dude behavior. IT’S BEEN DONE. Can we find something new? No. Because mainstream music (hell, most mainstream media) is out of ideas nowadays.
Sometimes, there’s a lot of beauty in simplicity. The soft strains of a single violin often brings tears to my eyes. One can argue it’s been done as well, but I’ll argue it carries more power simply because it’s not in your face all the time, demanding that you pay attention. Rather, it catches you by surprise and causes you to pause and really listen in a much softer, delicate way. Its softness lends itself to interestingness. If you can evoke emotion from something so simple, why the hell do we need people forcing themselves in our faces and into our ears?
I’m in a very anti-Lady Gaga mood right now. Sorry.

(We’re not even going to get started on Pitchfork, whom I used to love until they became worshipers at the feet of Gaga and M.I.A. - there are other artists out there doing much more important work, you know.)
